Gathered in extravagant Hong Kong by fate or whim, five Western women try to pluck happiness from the swirling shadows of a society in turmoil. On the surface, Davis's novel is an effervescent, multilayered concoction like the elaborate parfaits served at fancy dress dinners. At its core, though, is black-hearted murder so sordid that every other transgression pales to peccadillo. Davis writes inspired repartee and complements her vigorous dialog with settings and plots that are as diverting as they are realistic. Anyone coming to Davis's oeuvre first at this mature stage will be delighted that there are 14 more works (including Silk Lady) to dazzle and entertain them.
